Today, April 26th, we celebrate the Day of Lesbian Visibility

You might be asking yourself why there is a day of lesbian visibility. Perhaps it is because we continue to have to raise our voices more times than we would like. Sometimes it is because of a homophobic aggression against a friend. Other times, because people have treated us as sexual objects, calling us derogatory names, the result of the objectification and arousal with which we are always identified. Lately and increasingly we have to say “we are here” because the world does not let a brave girl be herself; instead, it harasses and discriminates against her.

Furthermore, the daily problems that women experience add up; insecurity, discrimination in the workplace, a lack of actual equality… If you are wondering why we still need a day of lesbian visibility: we have a hundred reasons like the ones that you have read above. We continue to need people to see us, we continue to need to reaffirm that equality does not exist, and we continue to need to defend our rights.

We hope that, in the future, this day will be a celebration of who we are and of how we have created an equal and equitable society, where our rights (which are the rights of everyone, in the end) are respected and where we live freely and in peace.
